Coming to DVD & Blu-ray in May: Mama and ABCs of Death!

Next month, you can snap up either of these two major horror releases wherever movies are sold: The Guillermo del Toro produced MAMA comes to DVD and Blu-ray courtesy of Universal Home Video. I haven't seen it myself but it seems that most people liked it... until they saw the disappointing ending. Here's more info on the film and the specs on the DVD and Blu-ray:

From Academy Award® nominated actress Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, The Help) comes the pulse-pounding tale of one mother’s twisted love in MAMA. Brought to life by Academy Award® nominee Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) and also starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (“Game of Thrones”), MAMA will be available on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack, DVD and On Demand on May 7, 2013 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. Also available on Digital Download on April 23, 2013.

MAMA is the haunting tale of two little girls who vanish without a trace from their suburban neighborhood the day that their parents were killed. But when the young sisters are found alive years later in a decrepit cabin, their uncle (Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend, Annabel (Chastain), take them in. As they try to introduce the children to a normal life, Annabel begins to wonder if the traumatized girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home or if someone or something still wants to come tuck them in at night.

The Blu-ray™ Combo Pack allows fans to watch MAMA anytime, anywhere on the device of their choice. It includes a Blu-ray™ disc, a DVD, a Digital Copy and UltraViolet™ for the ultimate, complete viewing experience.

· Blu-ray™ disc unleashes the power of your HDTV and is the best way to watch movies at home, featuring perfect hi-def picture and perfect hi-def sound.

· Digital Copy provides fans with a choice of digital options to watch on devices such as iPhone®, iPad®, Android™, computers and more.

· DVD offers the flexibility and convenience of playing the movie in more places, both at home and while away.

· UltraViolet™ is a revolutionary new way for fans to collect their moves and TV shows in the cloud. UltraViolet™ lets consumers instantly stream and download to tablets, smartphones, computers and TVs. Now available in both the United States and Canada.

BONUS FEATURES (BLU-RAY™ and DVD):
* MATRIARCAL SECRETS BD EXCLUSIVE: An in-depth exploration of the digital and practical effects employed to shape the film’s phantom presence.

* DELETED SCENES with Commentary by Director/Co-Writer Andy Muschietti and Producer/Co-Writer Barbara Muschietti.

* ORIGINAL SHORT WITH INTRODUCTION BY GUILLERMO DEL TORO with Commentary by Director/Co-Writer Andy Muschietti and Producer/Co-Writer Barbara Muschietti.

* THE BIRTH OF MAMA: MAMA began as a chilling short that announced a new voice in the horror genre. Exclusive interviews with Executive Producer Guillermo del Toro and the filmmakers track the bloodline of the feature and explore changes needed to make the transition to a film.

* FEATURE COMMENTARY with Director/Co-Writer Andy Muschietti and Producer/Co-Writer Barbara Muschietti.

What?! They removed the baby from the cover art?!
Also coming out in May is "The ABCs of Death" (read my review HERE) which has built itself a sturdy cult May 21st, and features 26 short films from 26 different directors from around the world.
following. This (in my opinion) failed cinematic experiment is coming to DVD and Blu-ray through Magnet Releasing on

Here are the special features that both the DVD and Blu-ray releases will contain:

* 11(DVD)/14 (BR) Behind the Scenes, Making-ofs and Deleted Scenes.

* Filmmaker Commentary (Over 30 Filmmakers).

* BD-Live Feature Exclusive to Blu-ray – Additional Short Film Contest Submissions.

I'd probably pick it up for the making-ofs and commentaries alone, just to get some insight into why all of these filmmakers chose the topics and made the artistic decisions that were displayed in their final products. While I admittedly only enjoyed a handful of the short films (about six out of the twenty-six), I'd love to have some of my curiosity sated.

Also, not to be a stickler, but why was the baby photoshopped out of the cover art? That sort of propelled me to actively seek the movie out and watch it... now the artwork just looks... generic.

Once again, THE ABCS OF DEATH hits DVD and Blu-ray on May 21st. You can pre-order yourself a copy by clicking on the links below.

CRUSH comes to DVD & Blu-ray on April 9th!

I recently received a heads-up from Millennium Entertainment that this new horror/thriller is coming to DVD & Blu-ray next week. Check out the synopsis and trailer below!

SYNOPSIS: Millennium Entertainment proudly announces the DVD and Blu-ray release of CRUSH for April 9, 2013. The teen-thriller stars Lucas Till, Crystal Reed, Sarah Bolger, Reid Ewing, Leigh Whannell and Caitriona Balfe and will be available DVD and Blu-ray.

High school heartthrob Scott has it all; good looks, popularity… and a secret admirer. But what starts out as a seemingly innocent crush soon turns deadly. Who's responsible? Scott’s long time friend Jules, frustrated with their platonic relationship? Bess, a shy classmate, increasingly jealous of his friendship with Jules? Or Jeffrey, a bright outcast whose crush on Bess has lead him to become increasingly obsessive? One thing's certain, time's running out and Scott must uncover the psychotic stalker before it’s too late.

The film is rated PG-13, and though it isn't something up my alley (my fiancee would probably enjoy it) I'll admit that it's good to see a woman going crazy over a dude for a change. Far too many times men turn out are the villains in these "Fatal Attraction" type films, so it's nice to see a film telling it like it really is, because WOMEN BE CRAZY!!!! (Just kidding! :: glances around nervously :: )

Once again, CRUSH hits DVD & Blu-ray next Tuesday (April 9th!) and you can pre-order it now at Amazon.com from the links below:

PRE-ORDER THE DVD FOR $26.09!

JOHN DIES AT THE END: Available on DVD & Blu-ray on April 2nd!

Based upon the popular novel by David Wong, JOHN DIES AT THE END follows two slackers who get caught up in an interdimensional adventure involving strange invaders who want to conquer the Earth. I actually saw it earlier this year after buying a "pre-theatrical rental" through Amazon and .... well... it was interesting to say the least. All eyes were glued to the TV, but most of us watching were scratching our heads a lot of the time. Apparently this is an adaptation that requires you to read the source material to fully appreciate the movie. Still, it was fun, and fans of the book should love it! Here's more info about this upcoming release:

SYNOPSIS: In JOHN DIES AT THE END, it’s all about the Soy Sauce, a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. Users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John (Rob Mayes) and David (Chase Williamson), a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs...

Adapted from David Wong’s audacious trans-genre horror novel, JOHN DIES AT THE END with screenplay by and directed by Don Coscarelli (BUBBA HO-TEP) and also stars Clancy Brown, Glynn Turman and Paul Giamatti.

 BONUS FEATURES
-- Commentary with Writer/Director Don Coscarelli, Producer Brad Baruh, Chase Williamson and Rob Mayes
-- Deleted Scenes
-- Getting Sauced: The Making of John Dies at the End
-- Creature Corps: The Effects of Soy Sauce
-- Casting Sessions
-- Fangoria Interview with Paul Giamatti
-- Trailers

Both the DVD & Blu-ray hit stores and e-tailers on Tuesday, April 2nd!

Tibor Takács' SPIDERS coming at you in 2D and 3D on March 12th!

Where have I seen this poster before?
Though he's been relegated to making various low-budget killer animal/nature runs amok films, Tibor Takács will forever hold a place in my heart for directing THE GATE. Even though he made an awful sequel to that classic, and worked on several failed TV series, and various low budget atrocities.... I can't hate the man that terrorized a young Stephen Dorff with pint-sized demons.

Now Tibor is back with an all new giant spider, 3D CGI-fest, aptly named SPIDERS! Here's the dirt on this upcoming creature feature:

"Millennium Entertainment announces the upcoming 3D + 2D Blu-ray, DVD and VOD release of SPIDERS for March 12, 2013. The film was released theatrically and on Premium VOD February 8, 2013. The Sci-Fi Horror stars Patrick Muldoon, Christa Campbell and Sydney Sweeney and will be available on 3D + 2D Blu-ray at an SRP of $34.99 and DVD + Digital Copy at an SRP of $29.99.

SPIDERS centers on mutant spiders that fall to earth from a disabled Soviet space station. With New York City threatened to be overrun, it's up to transit supervisor Jason Cole and health inspector Rachel Cole to save their daughter and prevent the colossal Queen Spider from uniting with her eggs and creating an army of massive killer spiders."

Ooohhh..... that's where.
Hahahaha. I love how a "transit supervisor" and "city health inspector" are the spider-stopping heroes of this film. Do they single-handedly save the day and crush the spider menace, or do they declare martial law and lead the military in a life or death battle against the arachnid invaders from space? Regardless, I'm all over this. I'm a sucker for any movie involving giant creatures attacking a metropolitan city, so this is a surefire rental for yours truly. (Truthfully, they had me at the poster, which kind of rips off the classic Ripley/Newt "ALIENS" poster. See what I mean? ----->)

SPIDERS has already had a limited theatrical release and hit Video on Demand services this past Friday. (Watch it instantly on Amazon.com for $6.99!) The DVD (which will be 2D and come with a digital copy) and the Blu-ray (which will contain both the 2D and 3D versions of the film), hit retailers (and e-tailers) on March 12th!

For more info about the movie, visit its IMDB page HERE.

Upcoming Tempe DVD titles: AGENT BEETLE and ATTACK OF THE JURASSIC SHARK!

Tempe's PR department dropped me a line the other day with news about their next two upcoming DVD releases. Both films were directed by Brett Kelly, who did the "Attack of the Giant Leeches" remake, along with various other low budget genre flicks. Each disc will feature their respective films in 16:9 anamorphic widescreen, have a theatrical trailer as an extra feature, and will be Region 0, meaning that they are playable worldwide!

First up is AGENT BEETLE:

Click for larger picture.
Synopsis: A rookie cop goes undercover at a drug company and poses as a criminal in order to get the information on a program that gives convicted felons superpowers. With his reporter ex-girlfriend on his trail, he must use his newly acquired powers to stop the program and bring its powerful convicts to justice!

Release Date: April 30,2013

Running Time: 80 minutes

Price: $19.99 (Pre-order it at Amazon.com!)

Next up is ATTACK OF THE JURASSIC SHARK:

Click for larger picture.
Synopsis: When an oil company unwittingly unleashes a prehistoric shark from its icy prison, the Jurassic killer maroons a group of art thieves and a group of beautiful young college students on an abandoned piece of land. The two opposing groups are forced to do what they can to survive or become food for the not-quite-extinct shark!

Release Date: May 28, 2013

Running Time: 79 minutes

Price: $19.99 (Pre-order it at Amazon.com!)

I've seen a few of Brett Kelly's movies (namely his two silly "Spacemen & Go Go Girls" short films) and I can vouch for his ability to do quite a bit with next to no budget. He's like a modern day Canadian Ed Wood. With that said, don't expect fantastic acting or jaw-dropping special effects (like I have to say that if you watched the trailers), but do expect to have some fun, especially if you round up a few friends and knock back a few brewskis.

Also, I'll admit that at $19.99 apiece, these two movies are kind of pricy (especially when you consider the quality of the films), but if you do pick them up, just remember that YOU are helping out a struggling independent filmmaker!

GORGO coming to Blu-ray on March 19th!

First off, a huge thanks to Kevin over at wtf-Film (which is sadly no longer updated) for sharing this on his Facebook page earlier today. Secondly... HOLY KAIJU SH*T! GORGO IS COMING TO BLU-RAY! And this isn't some cheapo DVD rip either; this is a legit "we totally give a f*ck about Gorgo" release!

VCI has released this title twice onto DVD (once in 2000 and then again in 2005) and each one had its flaws, which hopefully have been rectified now that they've supposedly gone back to original film elements and made an all new restoration for this release. We shall find out for sure on March 19th!

VCI's new disc promises a 1.85:1 widescreen aspect ratio in glorious HD, with enhanced 5.1 surround sound (with English and French audio options), and it will be PACKED to the gills with extras! (And it will sporting spiffy new cover art as well, as you can see..)

Special features on the disc include:
  • "Ninth Wonder Of The World: The Making Of Gorgo" a new documentary by Daniel Griffith
  •  Gorgo - Video Comic Book and Comic Book Cover Gallery
  •  Extensive Lobby Card & Poster Gallery
  • Photo Gallery
  • Gorgo Toys and Collectibles Gallery
  • Production Notes
  • Original Theatrical Trailer
  • Pressbook Gallery
  • Star Ciné Cosmos - French-language "fumetto" (comic book)
  • Before and After Restoration Video
I'm one of those crazy people who buys a new edition of a film every time it comes out in a new format, or even a new DVD/Blu-ray release, so I'll be picking this up! You can pre-order the all new sexy edition of GORGO (on Blu-ray or DVD) right now at Amazon.com for the low price of $14.99!

"In Fear" Sundance Poster unveiled + "Dead Sushi" gets LA theatrical release tomorrow!

I just received an e-mail that showcased the cool-looking poster art for IN FEAR which premieres at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday, January 20th. The film stars Iain De Caestecker (U.K. TV show The Fades), Alice Englert (the forthcoming Beautiful Creatures), and Allen Leech (Downton Abbey), and tells the story of a young couple who gets lost in a maze of country roads and attempts to survive a night-turned-nightmare.

If you're attending the festival, or just curious about this particular movie and want to pop in to give it a look, here is the screening schedule for IN FEAR:
  • Sunday, January 20, Midnight, Egyptian Theatre, Park City
  • Sunday, January 22, 9:30pm, Broadway Centre Cinema 6, Salt Lake City
  • Monday, January 23, 11:30pm, Prospector Square Theatre, Park City
  • Tuesday, January 25, 11:30am, Redstone Cinema 2, Park City

Not gonna be making it to Sundance at all next week? Do you live in or around Los Angeles? If you answered yes to both then you can get a look at a new film from the insane mind of Director Noboru Iguchi called DEAD SUSHI! The film is playing at the The Downtown Independent from Friday, January 18th up until Thursday, January 24th. For the full listing of screenings CLICK HERE. View the batshit insane trailer HERE.

Synopsis: "Keiko, the daughter of a legendary sushi chef, runs away from home when his Karate-style regimen becomes too severe. Finding work at a rural hot springs inn, she is ridiculed by the eccentric staff and guests, including the employees of a pharmaceutical firm there on a work retreat. But little do they know that a disgruntled former researcher has also come to the inn with a plan for revenge, using a serum he developed that can awaken the murderous instincts of ordinary sushi, turning it into bloodthirsty monsters! Keiko must use both her sushi training and her martial arts skills to save the others and defeat the flying killers.

From the director of “Machine Girl”, “Robogeisha” and “The ABCs of Death,”Noboru Iguchi brings us his latest horror film, DEAD SUSHI, an official selection of Fantastic Fest 2012, Fantasia Film Festival 2012, Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival 2012 and Toronto After Dark Film Festival 2012."

For everyone else, the only way you will see this flick next week is if you buy the DVD (pre-order it now at AMAZON.COM). The DEAD SUSHI Blu-ray will not be out until March 26th (pre-order it at AMAZON.COM for $13.49), unless you come across it at Best Buy, as it will be a "Best Buy Exclusive." The disc is unrated and offers up Behind the Scenes footage as an extra feature, plus two audio tracks and English subtitles. It's cost should be around $14.99.

It sounds like a fun and crazy movie, but pales in comparison to MONSTER ROLL, a short film/trailer about giant sea monsters battling kung-fu sushi chefs for the fate of Japan! The idea is hilariously awesome and the CGI work is fairly well done. Check it out for yourself below:

Press Release: LINNEA QUIGLEY SCREAMS THRU GRINDHOUSE DOUBLE FEATURE

Attention Horror fans, next week you can pick up a cool triple feature, starring 80's scream queen Linnea Quigley! Here's all the juicy info about this new DVD release:

"Scream Queen Linnea Quigley is no stranger to shock and splatter. The 1980s horror icon, inducted into Fangoria Magazine’s “Hall of Fame,” has been possessed, returned from the dead, pierced on antlers by a killer Santa and was even trapped inside Freddy Krueger’s chest. Coming to DVD from rapidheart.com  Tuesday, January 22, 2013 are three of the actresses long-lost cult classic terror-fests, NIGHTMARE SISTERS, DEADLY EMBRACE, and the gruesome MURDER WEAPON.

NIGHTMARE SISTERS– The camp horror classic that became one of USA’s UP ALL NIGHT most popular broadcasts returns after a decade in moratorium! Three innocent college girls (Quigley, Brinke Stevens of THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE and Michelle Bauer of HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS) become sorority succubus sisters when possessed by an evil spirit. It’s up to their geeky boyfriends to turn the sudden sexpots with killer bites back into the dorkalicious babes they know and love. Richard Gabai (VIRGIN HIGH) and Michael Sonye (FRIDAY THE 13TH) also star.

DEADLY EMBRACE– When a desperate housewife hires a hunky college guy (Ken Abraham, CREEPOZOIDS) to repair her home, she quickly attempts to seduce him. However, when his sprite young girlfriend (Quigley) shows up for a long, hot weekend of sex, jealousy and obsession consume the housewife, spiraling into a spree of kidnap, torture and murder. Also featuring an all-star cast of cult favorites Ruth Collins (PSYCHOS IN LOVE), Jan-Michael Vincent (AIRWOLF), Ty Randolph (BATMAN RETURNS), Michelle Bauer (PUPPET MASTER III), and Jack Carter (ALLIGATOR).

MURDER WEAPON– Two criminally insane mob daughters (Quigley and DICK TRACY’s Karen Russell), fresh out of the asylum, gather their ex-boyfriends claiming a desire for reconciliation. In truth, the temptresses have a need to avenge their broken hearts and satisfy an unending bloodlust. Also features Lyle Waggoner (THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW) and Eric Freeman (SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT, PART 2). Showing one of cinema’s most gruesome sledgehammer-to-the-head murders, this long-sought after title is available for the first time on DVD.

Loaded with sex and violence, all three films are featured in the hit documentary SCREAMING IN HIGH HEELS, currently airing on NBCUniversal’s Chiller TV, generating interest with horror fans old and new. The LINNEA QUIGLEY GRINDHOUSE TRIPLE FEATURE, available through amazon.com and other major retailers, is 240 minutes of unbridled fun and fear, including new commentary tracks on each film by Quigley and director David DeCoteau."

Check out Episode One of BMFV Radio!

I've been toiling away for hours to put together a half-hour online broadcast and it is now available for your listening pleasure(?). CLICK HERE to listen to episode one of BMFV-6600, "The Future of b-movie radio!"

Highlights of the show include:
A review of "Prophecy" (1979) complete with a few audio clips.
A sample of the soundtrack from "Prophecy."
Coverage of this month's theatrical, DVD, and Blu-ray cult film releases.
A teeny bit o' b-movie news.

It's been a long time since I've recorded anything live or otherwise, so I'm pretty rusty and say things like "You know" and "Uh" a lot. Sorry about that. I also ran into a few other issues (e.g. background noise caused by my propane heater), but overall, I think that this came out ok. If you enjoyed the show, please let me know. The entire future of BMFV radio is sort of banking on public reaction to this first episode, so any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Night of the Creeps getting a legit DVD release.... FINALLY!

Yes, you read that right, and no it is not a joke. (Look at your calendar if you don't believe me... April Fool's Day is long gone!) As I was perusing the web today, I waltzed through Chud.com (one of the greatest, if not THE greatest movie news site on the web) and discovered that Sony is finally pulling their head out of their ass for ten minutes, in order to bring Fred Dekker's classic horror / sci-fi / comedy to the masses!

According to Chud.com's source (i.e. ShockTillYouDrop.com), the movie will be UNCUT and have the original ending! Plus, the disc is promised to be packed with extras, to the point that I hope we get an impressive 2-disc special edition that rivals Lionsgate's "Monster Squad" DVD!

Rejoice fellow "Creep" fans, and prepare for glory this October! (And yes, as soon as I find out the official release date, I will pass it on to all of you!)

September 11th... forgotten because there's so many cool DVDs coming out!

Yes, 9/11 is a terrible historical event that will forever be remembered but I prefer to forget such an awful memory, especially when so much cool stuff is now out on DVD! Here are the discs that I've been anticipating for weeks (many of which have been OOP for years and are now seeing their debut on DVD!):

MGM Midnite Movie Double Features:
The Beast Within / The Bat People
Blueprint for Murder / The Man in the Attic
Chosen Survivors / The Earth Dies Screaming
Devils of Darkness / Witchcraft

I'm trying to discover a way to get some quick cash (short of selling blood or prostituting myself) to get these, but it looks like I'll just have to be patient and pick them up as I have extra cash. (DAMN!) However, YOU can easily help my cause by purchasing any of these movies through the B-MOVIE FILM VAULT DVD SHOP! Don't feel obligated to get anything through the DVD shop or any of my Amazon.com or Movies Unlimited links found throughout the Vault, but rest assured that you are doing a GOOD thing if you do utilize those affiliate links. ;-D

Well I'm going to go and dream about those discs, so g'night b-movie fans and happy shopping tomorrow! ;-)
